New York/Kyiv, 07 Apr: Russia is set to be suspended from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for raising international pressure on the 43rd day of Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
It is to be voted on Thursday in the United Nations General Assembly. Meanwhile, Russian soldiers have been accused of killing more than 5,000 civilians in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol.
Even 43 days after Russia’s attack on Ukraine, no international pressure on Russia is working. Now the US has proposed to suspend Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council. The resolution will be voted on in the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday. For this a special emergency session of the General Assembly has been called. The 193-member UN body is expected to act in this special session on a draft resolution to suspend Russia.
The Human Rights Council consists of 47 member states, elected directly and personally by secret ballot by a majority of the members of the General Assembly. The General Assembly may, by a two-thirds majority of the members present and voting, suspend the membership of the Council of a member of the Council for a gross and systematic violation of human rights.
Meanwhile, the mayor of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol has claimed that more than 5,000 civilians were killed in the Russian attack.
Mayor Vadium Boichenko said Wednesday that 210 children were among the dead. According to him, Russian military forces also bombed hospitals and 50 people died in one hospital.
He said that 90 percent of the city’s infrastructure has been destroyed in Russian shelling.
