Rampur, 27 Oct: On Thursday, the Rampur special MP/MLA court convicted Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan in a ‘provocative’ remark case. On April 9, 2019, a case was filed against Khan at Milak Kotwali in Rampur for allegedly making provocative remarks against Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath and IAS Aunjaneya Kumar Singh, the then DM.
“I had raised concerns that Azam Khan was trying to incite violence between two communities by delivering provocative statements and he also used foul language for the then DM and his mother,” said Akash Saxena, an advocate and local BJP leader who was pitted against Khan in the recent UP Assembly elections in 2022. “After receiving my complaint, the returning officer investigated the incident and, after seeing the video evidence of Khan’s comments, he ordered a FIR against Khan,” he claimed.
The quantum of sentence will be given later during the day. In 2019, Khan was booked for hate speech after making statements about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Azam was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court earlier this year and freed. He faces over 90 cases, including corruption and theft.
