India refrains as UN votes against violence in Iran

Geneva, 25 Nov: Growing violence against protestors in Iran had its eco in the United Nations. A resolution to send a special team to review the situation was moved during a special session of the United Nations on Human Rights.

United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights Volker Turk demanded a high-level enquiry into the violence in Iran. He also demanded a special mission for the enquiry. The demand was supported by 25 member nations, while six including India refrained from voting. The resolution was passed by a majority.

Turk spoke about growing violence in Iran, following custody death of Mahsa Amini for allegedly violating the rules relating to Hijab. Women are being beaten mercilessly in streets, even children are not being spared. Islamic Revolutionary Guard is using explosives against the protestors. The agitation has spread in 150 cities and 140 colleges in Iran.

Special Repporteur on Human Rights situation Jaived Rehman said that the violence in Iran has increased during the last week. More than 70 people, including five children, were killed during the last week. The majority of them are from Kurdish area.

Iran’s representative Khadijeh Karimi said that Iran has constituted a committee for enquiry into Amini’s death. Iran Government has taken all steps to conduct an enquiry, including forensic tests in Amini’s case. The Western nations are making biased statements even before the enquiry is conducted by Iran Government. He alleged that interference from Western nations has turned peaceful agitation into riots and violence.
