Lucknow, 25 Jan: On Wednesday, the son of a Samajwadi Party MLA was detained in connection with the collapse of a multi-story building in Lucknow, which killed two ladies and wounded numerous others.
According to a police officer, Nawajish Shahid, the son of SP MLA and former minister Shahid Manzoor, was picked up from Meerut and detained. Nawajish Shahid is one of three persons identified in a criminal complaint filed in connection with the crime. The other two are Mohammad Tariq and Fahad Yazdani. Nawajish Shahid is said to be the owner of the site on which the Yazdan Builders building stood. Shahid Manzoor is a senior SP leader who now represents Kithore in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
On Wednesday, a FIR was filed at the Hazratganj police station under IPC sections 323 (voluntary inflicting harm), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 420 (fraud), and 120B (criminal conspiracy), as well as section 7 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act.
The five-story Alaya Apartments in the Uttar Pradesh capital’s Hazratganj neighbourhood fell Tuesday evening, burying more than a dozen people underneath it. Abbas Haider’s wife, Uzma Haider, 30, and mother, Begum Haider, 72, have perished, and two more persons are believed to be buried beneath the rubble. According to an official, 14 people have been recovered from the debris and are being treated at hospitals.
According to Lucknow Police Commissioner S B Shiradkar, one of the three persons identified in the FIR has been detained, while the remaining are being sought. He stated that the building was built between 2009 and 2010, and that the reasons for its collapse are unknown; specialists will investigate.
