New Delhi,Aug.16 : The Election Commission demanded that the voter card be linked to Aadhar. For this, the Commission has also written a letter to the Law Ministry. The Election commission said that they should be empowered to link Aadhaar with Voter ID card. This will prevent bogus voter cards. This step is also in the national interest.

In this case, the Election Commission has already requested the government, but then the government kept avoiding it because the Aadhaar case was pending in the Supreme Court. Now once again the demand has arisen in the Modi government, then the commission is also hopeful that it may be implemented.

Significantly, after the continuous questioning of the purity of the election process by the opposition parties including Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party leader and lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay filed a petition in the Delhi High Court. Upadhyay had demanded the implementation of an Aadhar card based voting system to prevent fake voting and ensure maximum participation in the election process.

Upadhyay had sought the High Court to direct the Election Commission in this regard, stating that linking the Aadhar card with the voter ID card would not violate the fundamental rights.

While giving a decision on the petition, the Delhi High Court had asked the Election Commission to set guidelines in this regard. The High Court gave the Election Commission eight weeks for this.
