New Delhi, August 3: The central government has imposed a ‘curb’ on the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra-small form factor (USFF) computers, and servers with immediate effect.

In a notification issued on Thursday, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said that the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, and servers has been put under the ‘restricted’ category with immediate effect. The move is aimed at reducing imports from countries like China and promoting Make in India.

According to this notification, up to 20 items per consignment will now be exempt from import licences for the purposes of research and development, testing, benchmarking and evaluation, repair and return, and product development. Restricting the import of a product means that a licence or government permission is mandatory for its import.
