Prayagraj, 13 Sept: Lawyers in Uttar Pradesh will be absent from court on Wednesday and Thursday to protest the state government’s “inaction” in an alleged police lathi-charge on counsel in Hapur.

The Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh unanimously resolved on Tuesday night to refrain from judicial work on September 13-14, according to Bar Council president Shiv Kishore Gaur in a statement published here. On September 13, attorneys from the district and tehsil bars would submit a memorandum to the government via the relevant DMs and SDMs, he added.

On September 14, attorneys will peacefully burn an effigy of the government on court grounds.

Earlier, the Allahabad High Court Bar’s executive meeting unanimously resolved to refrain from judicial activity on Wednesday as well, according to an official notification published here.

The group determined that if any lawyer was caught undertaking court work, disciplinary action would be taken against him, according to the report. “There is resentment among lawyers because the state government has taken no concrete action against policemen involved in the lathi-charge on advocates on August 29,” it stated. On Sunday night, the Council members assembled for an emergency meeting.

The group unanimously determined that advocates would not appear in court on September 11 and 12.
