New Delhi, 30 September: The last date for depositing Rs 2,000 notes in banks or exchanging them with other notes has been extended till October 7.
Till now the last date for changing or submitting it was 30 September. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) gave this information in the circular issued after 5 pm on September 30.
RBI said that on the basis of review, the existing system of deposit and exchange of Rs 2000 notes has been extended till October 7. Since the scheduled time for the withdrawal process has ended, on the basis of review, it has been decided to extend the existing system of depositing and exchanging Rs 2,000 notes till October 7.
However, according to RBI, 96 percent of the Rs 2,000 notes issued by it have been deposited back in the banks. It is clear that due to some reasons people have still not exchanged or deposited the 4 per cent notes.
This is the reason why RBI has said that even after October 7, the Rs 2,000 note will remain a legal tender, but it will not be able to be deposited in the normal branches of banks nor will it be exchanged.
From October 8, Rs 20,000 i.e. 10 notes of Rs 2,000 each can be deposited at a time only in 19 branches of Reserve Bank of India. This is a big relief for those people who either have not been able to deposit the Rs 2,000 notes due to being abroad or who have not got the chance to deposit them due to some other reason.
