Delhi, 10 January: The high-level committee led by former president Ram Nath Kovind on the topic of ‘One Nation, One Election’ has garnered a significant response from the public, with over 5,000 suggestions being received so far.

The committee, which was constituted in September last year, had invited suggestions from the public to make necessary changes in the existing legal and administrative framework for implementing simultaneous polls in the country.

The deadline for submitting suggestions was January 15 and all the received suggestions will now be considered by the committee.

In addition to this, the committee has also held meetings with political parties and sought their views on the idea of holding simultaneous polls. It has also reached out to six national parties, 33 state parties, and seven registered unrecognised parties for their inputs.

The Law Commission has also been consulted on this matter and could be called again for further discussions. As per its terms of reference, the committee is responsible for examining and making recommendations for simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, municipalities, and panchayats.

This includes suggesting amendments to the Constitution, Representation of People Act, 1950 and 1951, as well as any other laws or rules that may require changes for conducting simultaneous elections.

With the committee actively seeking inputs from various stakeholders, it remains to be seen what recommendations will be made and whether simultaneous elections will become a reality in India in the near future.
