Rawalpindi, 30 Jan: The Special Court under the Official Secrets Act sentenced former Pakistan President Imran Khan to 10 years imprisonment, in connection with the cipher case, Pakistani media has reported. His close associate and former minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has also been inflicted with the same punishment.

The Special Court judge Abul Hasnat Muhammad Zulqernain delivered the verdict on Tuesday. Imran Khan can appeal against the verdict in a higher court.

Imran Khan was charged with sharing the contents of a secret cable sent by the country’s ambassador in Washington to the Government of Pakistan. Imran Khan is the founder of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI). The party called that it was a mockery and disregard of the law in the cipher case.

Dawn News reported that the Special Court had begun the cipher trial afresh last month at the Adiala district jail after Imran Khan and Qureshi were indicted for the second time in the case on December 13.
