New Delhi, November 20: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday took action against Uttar Pradesh policemen accused of violating guidelines during the by-elections.
Taking action on other complaints including allegations of unnecessarily stopping voters, the Election Commission ordered the suspension of policemen posted in Sisamau assembly constituency of Kanpur.
According to official sources, this step has been taken after Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar’s instructions to District Election Officers (DEOs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) to ensure fair and smooth polling. Officials were instructed to inform the complainants through social media and tag them in updates to resolve all complaints and maintain transparency.
In fact, this action was taken when Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav urged the Election Commission to suspend all police officers checking voter cards and Aadhaar IDs on the basis of video evidence.
Acting on the Commission’s directions, the District Election Officers and Superintendents of Police have suspended the policemen after confirming the complaints.
