New Delhi, 20 December: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned indefinitely on Friday amid uproar over the issue of scuffle between Ambedkar and MPs. As soon as the proceedings of the House began on Friday morning, the opposition started creating ruckus.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar first adjourned the proceedings of the House till 12 noon. After that, when the proceedings of the House began, 12 Rajya Sabha MPs were nominated for the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed for ‘One Nation One Election’.

These include MPs Ghanshyam Tiwari, Bhuvaneshwar Kalita, K. Laxman, Kavita Patidar, Sanjay Kumar Jha, Randeep Singh Surjewala, Mukul Balakrishna Wasnik, Saket Gokhale, P. Wilson, Sanjay Singh, Manas Ranjan Mangaraj and V. Vijaysai Reddy. Earlier this week, 27 members from the Lok Sabha were nominated to the JPC.

On Friday, in his concluding speech in the winter session of the House, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said that while concluding this session on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Constitution, we have to witness a moment of serious reflection. The purpose of celebrating Constitution Day in the historic Constitution House was to reaffirm democratic values, but the work done in this House tells a different story.

He said that the productivity of this session is only 40.03 percent, in which only 43 hours and 27 minutes of effective work was done.

He said that as MPs, we are facing strong criticism from the people of India. The constant disruptions in the proceedings of Parliament are constantly reducing the public’s confidence in our democratic institutions. In this session, the Oil Sector Amendment Bill and the Boilers Bill 2024 were passed and the statement of the Foreign Minister on India-China relations was heard, but the failures of this House have been far more than these achievements.

The Chairman said that the growing tendency to publicise notices through the media and resort to Rule 267 before parliamentary deliberations further erodes our institutional dignity. India’s 1.4 billion citizens expect better from us.
