New Delhi, March 28: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) chairman and toll operators to provide food, water and other necessary commodities to migrant labourers/ workers on the national highway.
This order has been given in view of the enforcement of 21 days of lockdown to stop the rapid spread of infection of #COVID-19 in the country by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The migrant daily wagers and workers are facing enormous difficulties due to the lockdown across the country. They are trapped in different parts of the country and are forced to walk hundreds of kilometers through highways to reach their respective hometowns.
Union Minister Gadkari said that he has advised the NHAI chairman and the highway toll operators to consider availing food, water or any other assistance to migrant workers / citizens going to the places of origin.
Road Transport and Highways Minister Gadkari said that in this time of crisis, we have to be kind to our fellow citizens.
He hoped that the toll operators would react positively to his call. Earlier, Gadkari had asked NHAI to stop toll collection on all national highways to facilitate transportation of essential commodities.
