New Delhi, July 23: So far, 22 per cent of schools in the country are either running in old buildings or are in shabby condition.
Not only this, 31 percent of schools have cracks on the walls of their buildings. That is, the children studying in 22 percent of schools in the country are not safe.
It states the report of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
In fact, the National Child Rights Protection Commission (NCPCR) conducted a survey in 12 states across the country to gather information about the safety of children in schools.
The survey was conducted in 26071 government and private schools in 201 districts of 12 states.
Although it has more number of government schools. The survey conducted in Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan included 4 percent of the schools.
Highlights of the report-
1) 44 percent of schools have computers only, 34 percent of schools do not have rooms for every classroom
2) In about 40% of schools, poor system of laboratories
3) 90% schools have drinking water but 55% schools do not have water purity check 4) High voltage transformer in 22% school premises
5) Fire fighting equipment or fire extinguishing system in 63 percent of schools
6) Earthquake measures in only 21 percent of schools
7) 22 percent schools do not have playgrounds, 21 percent schools do not have sports equipment
8) 11 percent of the schools are on the river or sea shore, 56 percent of these schools do not have any arrangements to protect children from floods, storms and cloudbursts, nor do any vehicles exist to get children out of emergency.
9) Only 28% schools have school management buses, 34% of the buses do not have first aid kit
10) Toilets in 96% of schools, separate toilets for women in 89% of schools, sweepers in 67% of schools
Priyank Kanoongo, Chairman of NCPCR, said that the Commission has prepared this report with the participation of children.
He said that this report will prove helpful in ensuring school safety of the children of the country. This report is dedicated to those children who are fulfilling their national obligation to get education in the face of every good or bad situation.
