New Delhi, 25 February: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of various infrastructure related projects costing Rs 12,400 crore in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu here on Thursday.
However, the Nyveli new thermal power project, which the PM is about to dedicate to the nation is major one.
The Nyveli project is a lignite based power plant, designed with a power generation capacity of 1000 MW. It has two units of 500 MW capacities.
The project has been prepared at a cost of about 8000 crores rupees. This will benefit Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Puducherry. Tamil Nadu will have 65 percent share in electricity.
According to the statement released from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Modi will lay the foundation stone of various infrastructure related projects in Coimbatore at 4 pm on Thursday.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will also dedicate to the nation the 709 MW solar power project of NLCIL, which is installed on about 2670 acres of land in Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar districts. The project has been set up at a cost of over Rs 3000 crore.
The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for expansion, renovation and modernization of the Lower Bhavani Project System. Significantly, the Bhawanisagar dam and canal system was completed in the year 1955. The expansion of the Lower Bhavani Project irrigates more than two lakh acres of land in Erode, Tiruppur and Karur districts.
The project will be completed at a cost of Rs 934 crore under the basic development assistance of NABARD. Its main objective is to rehabilitate the existing irrigation structures in the system and increase the capacity of the canals.
The PM Modi also to inaugurate the eight-lane Korampallam Bridge and the rail over bridge (ROB) at the port of Chidambaranar. It is one of the major ports of India. Currently 76 percent of the cargo is transported by road to the port via the existing Korampallam Bridge, which was constructed in 1964 as a 14 meter wide carriageway.
On an average, about 3,000 heavy freight trucks pass through this bridge daily, causing heavy congestion on the road. The project of 8 laning of the existing Korampallam Bridge and the ROB has been chalked out to prevent uninterrupted clearance of goods and congestion in the port area. The project has been implemented with funding support under the Sagarmala program.
PM Modi will lay the foundation for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a 5 MW grid-connected ground-based solar power plant at Chidambaranar Port. The project, to be set up at an estimated cost of around Rs 20 crore, will generate 80 lakh units (kWh) of energy every year and will be able to meet 56 percent of the total energy consumption of the port. This will help reduce carbon footprint in port operations.
Here, Narendra Modi will inaugurate more than 4,000 houses constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) Scheme. These houses have been constructed at a cost of over 330 crore rupees.
