New Delhi, 15 March: India has built over 1530 kilometers of roads along the China border. The total length of strategically important roads along this border is 3323 km. Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that 19 roads are still under construction along the India-China border which are to be completed by 2023.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh gave this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
He said that several initiatives have been taken to complete the construction of 19 roads on the China border in Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim soon.
“The India-China Border Roads (India-China Border Roads-ICBR) project aims to develop infrastructure along the Sino-Indian border by constructing ‘strategic roads’. A number of institutions are responsible for the construction of roads along the China border, including the Border Roads Organization (BRO) handling the roads of the ICBR project,” added Singh.
Rajnath Singh told in Upper House of the Parliament that in this work, NHAI, Central Public Works Department (CPWD), National Project Construction Corporation (NPCC) Institutions support BRO. Compared to China, India has significantly upgraded the infrastructure in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) with five airbases, an extensive rail network and more than 58 thousand km of roads.
“BRO is responsible for construction of 105 border roads, of which 73 ICBR roads in Phase-I have been completed by December 2020 and 32 roads are being constructed under the second phase of ICBR project,” he added.
