New Delhi, 20 December: The Delhi High Court dismissed the petition of Sultana Begum, the grand-daughter of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, to claim rights over the Red Fort. A bench of Justice Rekha Palli ordered the dismissal of the petition.
The High Court dismissed the petition of Sultana Begum only on the ground of delay in filing it without considering the merit of the petition.
The court said that when Sultana’s ancestors did not does anything about the claim on the Red Fort, now what can the court do in it. it’s too late now.
Sultana said that in 1857 the East India Company forcibly took possession of the Red Fort. Advocate Vivek More, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that Sultana Begum is the legitimate owner of the Red Fort. Sultana Begum is the successor of Bahadur Shah Zafar. It was said in the petition that the government’s occupation of the Red Fort is illegal.
