Chandigarh, December 27: Power has slipped from the hands of BJP in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections. The Aam Aadmi Party, which contested for the first time here, has emerged as the largest party by winning the maximum number of seats.
Meanwhile, no political party has got an absolute majority. There are total 35 municipal corporation seats in Chandigarh. The Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Shiromani Akali Dal contested the elections on the official symbol.
On December 24, 60.4 per cent voter turnout was recorded. According to the results declared on Monday, Aam Aadmi Party has won 14 seats out of 35, Bharatiya Janata Party in 12 seats, Congress in eight seats and Shiromani Akali Dal in one seat.
To form the government in the corporation, 17 seats are needed. In this context, no party has the majority figure. Aam Aadmi Party is at number one with maximum majority. Due to the vote of the MP, the BJP has the figure of 13. Therefore, any kind of reversal in the coming days cannot be ruled out.
Now the uproar has started to garner majority in the municipal corporation and form the government. According to the Chandigarh Corporation Governing Rules, the term of the Mayor here is one year and it is considered to be applicable from January 1. In such a situation, there will be uproar in Chandigarh in the next two days.
The Advisor to the Administrator has also sought legal opinion after no party got a majority. A decision in this regard can be taken on Tuesday.
