Kanpur, January 07: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has filed 107 patents in the calendar year 2021, which is the highest number of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) filed by the institute, breaking its earlier record of 76 patents filed in 2019.
This was achieved despite the devastating impact of the second wave of COVID-19. Various IPR possibilities out of 107 IPRs filed include 4 US patent applications with 62 patents, 15 design registrations, 2 copyright and 24 trademark applications.
The IIT Kanpur Director Prof Abhay Karandikar said that, I am happy to share that IIT Kanpur has not only crossed the century (100) in terms of patent filing in 2021, but has also reached a total of 810 IPRs over a period of time.
โWith an exceptional technology transfer rate of 15.2 per cent to industry partners out of the total patents granted, the institute registered a record-breaking 107 patents in this calendar year. In spite of this, IIT Kanpur has diligently driven structural initiatives while bolstering transformative research that contributes to a self-reliant India,โ he added.
It is included in the patent
Patents included inventions ranging from Medtech to Nanotechnology. In view of the Institute’s tireless contribution to the national efforts to mitigate the novel coronavirus pandemic, several COVID-19-related measures and inventions were protected through patent applications during the calendar year.
However, two major inventions among them are reusable facemasks developed at the IIT Kanpur including PVDF composite nano fiber and nasal spray formulation against COVID and related respiratory viruses. In addition, the institute also made some other inventions such as methods of treatment of industrial wastewater and methods of treatment from biodegradable magnesium-based alloys for orthopaedic applications in the health sector.
