New Delhi, 18 July: Hearing on the petition of religious guru Devki Nandan Thakur seeking minority status for Hindus in nine states has been adjourned for two weeks.
The Supreme Court asked the petitioner to put such concrete examples, where despite having a small population in a particular state, Hindus have not got the rightful status of minority.
Senior advocate Arvind Datar, appearing for the petitioner, said that this matter has already been referred from the court to the National Commission for Minorities, after that the court directed to present the report of the Minorities Commission.
The petition stated that Hindus have become a minority in nine states, but still they cannot open educational institutions of their choice, while the Constitution gives this right to minorities.
The petition stated, the nine states where Hindus are a minority in the petition are Ladakh, Mizoram, Lakshadweep, Kashmir, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Punjab and Manipur.
The petition states that Hindus are one per cent in Ladakh, 2.75 per cent in Mizoram, 2.77 per cent in Lakshadweep, 4 per cent in Kashmir, 8.74 per cent in Nagaland, 11.52 per cent in Meghalaya, 29 per cent in Arunachal, 38.49 per cent in Punjab and 41.29 per cent in Manipur.
