Prayagraj, 28 June: The Allahabad High Court granted conditional bail to a man accused of assaulting people for raising “Jai Shri Ram” slogan.
According to the prosecution, the accused, Irfan, and others on his side began harassing persons returning to their home while raising ‘Jai Shri Ram’ religious chants. An altercation apparently erupted after the opposing side objected.
The accused side allegedly beat them up with batons, the butt of country-made pistols, iron rods, and other local weapons. Irfan was charged under Sections 147, 148, 504, 307, 354 Kha, and 324 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
During his bail application, Irfan claimed innocence. He also claimed that members of his side had been injured; implying that the matter was not one-sided and that just his side beat up the opposing side.
The High Court granted conditional bail on a Rs 50,000 personal bond and two sureties.
The accused stated that he has been imprisoned since March and that if bail is not given, his future would be jeopardised, and the trial is unlikely to complete in the near future, therefore he must be released. It was also pointed out that other accused in the case had previously been given bail; therefore he must be as well.
Following this, the judge ordered that Irfan be released on bail.
