GUWAHATI, April 21: The Kokrajhar Police has arrested Jignesh Mevani, MLA from Gujarat. Mevani was arrested by Kokrajhar Police from Palanpur Circuit House in Gujarat at 11.30 pm last night in a case registered against him in Assam.

Police is busy preparing to bring the MLA to Assam on Thursday. The reason for the arrest of the MLA is yet to be made public by the Kokrajhar police. However, it is believed that the MLA has been arrested a few days ago for making remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Twitter.

An FIR was lodged against Mevani by a person named Anoop Kumar Dey at Kokrajhar police station.

The Kokrajhar police have allegedly registered an FIR against MLA Mevani under various sections of the Indian Penal Code including 504, 506, 120 (B), 153 (A), 295 (A).

MLA Mevani had made many tweets about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nathuram Godse. After this, an FIR was lodged against Mevani by a person named Anoop Kumar Dey, a resident of Bhawanipur in Kokrajhar district. Based on the said FIR, the Korajhar police registered a case and arrested Mevani last night.

Apart from being a lawyer, Jignesh Mevani is also a human rights activist. He had won the Vadgam constituency of Gujarat Legislative Assembly in 2017 as an independent candidate. He is also on the post of convener of Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has opposed Mevani’s arrest. The APCC is preparing to present its side, possibly on Thursday.
