Lucknow, 28 April: The Supreme Court asked the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday why Atiq and Ashraf Ahmed were not carried to the hospital gate in an ambulance. “Why were they paraded?” queried the Supreme Court while hearing a request for an impartial commission to investigate the murders of the feared criminals.

A bench led by Justice S Ravindra Bhatt also inquired as to how the gunmen learned that Atiq and Ashraf would be subjected to medical examinations. The court also ordered the Yogi Adityanath government to provide a detailed statement outlining the procedures taken to investigate the April 15 incident outside Moti Lal Hospital in Prayagraj.

“Affidavit shall also disclose steps taken with regard to prior incidents and follow-up steps pursuant to Justice Dr Chauhan commission report. The government can list these in three weeks,” the bench stated.

Three men acting as journalists shot the brothers dead at point blank range while media persons and police were there. The UP government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has launched a high-level investigation into the deaths. All three murder suspects, Arun Maurya, Sunny Singh, and Lavlesh Tiwari, were apprehended on the spot.

On April 16, the Ahmed brothers were laid to rest in the Kasari-Masari cemetery in Prayagraj. Their close relatives attended the burial, as did Atiq’s two minor kids, Ahjam and Aban. Both of Ashraf’s daughters also attended the burial.
