Atiq killing: 5 more UP cops suspended

Prayagraj, 19 April: On Wednesday, five Prayagraj police personnel were suspended in connection with the deaths of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf. Cops were assigned to the Shahganj Police Station. The MLN Medical College, where the brothers were shot, was within the authority of this police station.

On April 16, three persons acting as journalists shot Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, both charged in the Umesh Pal murder case. The incident occurred in the presence of many police officers and journalists who had come to interact with Atiq and his brother. Sunny Singh (23) of Hamirpur, Lavlesh Tiwari (22) of Banda, and Arun Maurya (18) of Kasganj were remanded in police custody for four days till April 23.

The suspension of cops and the arrest of shooters occurred on the same day that UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath presided over a meeting to accelerate the process to arrest Atiq’s wife Shaista Parveen and other accused in the Umesh Pal murder case, including Guddu Muslim.

Guddu Muslim is one of ten persons named in the Umesh Pal murder investigation. Six of them were slain, and Guddu Muslim is one of four persons still on the run. The meeting was also attended by Uttar Pradesh Police STF chief Amitabh Yash, Special DG Prashant Kumar, and other police personnel via video conference. The officials deliberated on how to rapidly apprehend Shaista and Guddu Muslim. So far, the police have identified more than 20 persons accused of assisting Shaista Parveen. Guddu Muslim was last known to be in Karnataka.
