New Delhi, April 25: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won a one-sided victory in the elections held on Friday for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in Delhi. Raja Iqbal Singh has been elected as Mayor and Jai Bhagwan Yadav as Deputy Mayor.

Congress candidate Ariba Khan withdrew her nomination for the post of Deputy Mayor, due to which BJP’s Jai Bhagwan Yadav was elected unopposed Deputy Mayor. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) did not participate in this election, due to which BJP’s victory was already considered certain.

Raja Iqbal Singh thanked everyone after the victory and said that BJP will provide its full support to Delhi Municipal Corporation.

He also mentioned that development work in the Municipal Corporation was slow for some time but with the arrival of BJP, these works will accelerate. He also said that the Municipal Corporation will also take important steps in the field of education and health.

142 councillors participated in the municipal elections, in which the BJP candidate got 133 votes and the Congress candidate got 8 votes. The electoral college for the mayoral election included 238 councillors as well as 10 MPs (seven from Lok Sabha and three from Rajya Sabha) and 14 MLAs.

Raja Iqbal Singh has also promised to reduce pollution, a major problem of the capital. With this victory of BJP, the party’s triple engine government has been formed in Delhi. BJP will be in power at all three levels – center, state and municipal corporation. This victory can prove to be an important milestone for BJP in Delhi politics.

It is worth mentioning that the Lieutenant Governor had appointed Satya Sharma as the presiding officer when the outgoing mayor Mahesh Kumar and deputy mayor Ravindra Bhardwaj did not come. Before this election, tribute was paid to those killed in the Pahalgam attack.
