Delhi, 14 March: The Centre has taken a significant step in addressing the alarming issue of dog attacks by banning 23 ferocious breeds, which include Pitbull, Pitbull Terrier, American Bulldog, Rottweiler and Mastiffs.
The directive by the Central Government not only restricts keeping these breeds as pets, but also calls for their sterilization to prevent possible attacks. The banned breeds also include American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, Boerboel Kangal, Central Asian Shepherd Dog and Caucasian Shepherd Dog. South Russian Shepherd Dog, Tornjak, Sarplaninac, Japanese Tosa and Akita, Mastiffs, Terriers, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Wolf Dogs, Canario, Akbash Dog, Moscow Guard Dog, Cane Corso and Bandog are the other breeds that have been deemed dangerous and are not allowed to be kept as pets.
This decision was taken after receiving multiple representations from citizens, citizen forums and Animal Welfare Organisations, highlighting the potential threat these breeds pose to human life. The government’s decision to ban these breeds will help to ensure the safety of citizens and prevent any further incidents of dog attacks.
