New Delhi, 28 October: The government has started preparations to curb the rising prices of onion in the domestic market. To maintain domestic availability, the Central Government has fixed the Minimum Export Price (MEP) of US $ 800 (about Rs 67 thousand) per metric tonne on onion export.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification issued on Saturday that the MEP of onions sent abroad is set at $800 per tonne till December 31, 2023.
According to the notification, the government has taken this step in view of the rising prices of onion. In fact, due to less supply, retail prices of onion have increased to Rs 65-80 per kg in the markets of the national capital Delhi.
It is noteworthy that Mother Dairy, which has about 400 successful retail stores in the Delhi-NCR region, is selling onions at the rate of Rs 67 per kg.
At the same time, it is available on e-commerce portal BigBasket at the rate of Rs 67 per kg and on OTP at the rate of Rs 70 per kg. Local vendors are selling onions at the rate of Rs 80 per kg.
