New Delhi, March 11: The Union Home Ministry will notify rules under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA-2019) today. Under the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024, eligible persons will be able to apply for Indian citizenship.

While sharing information in this regard today, the Home Ministry has said that the application process will be completely online and a web portal has been made available for this.

It is noteworthy that CAA is a provision to make it easier for people of minority community living in India’s neighboring countries Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh to get citizenship. Under this, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Christians, Parsis and Jains who have come from these countries after being persecuted can apply for Indian citizenship.

There were protests in 2019 regarding the CAA. There was a big movement in Shaheen Bagh. Later the protesters had to move away due to outbreak of Covid pandemic. The government is alert to ensure that such protests do not happen this time and are fully prepared for it.
