Congress Working Committee announces party president election

New Delhi, 28 August: The Congress party will get its next president by October 19, the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s top decision-making body, on Sunday approved the election schedule for the president.

The program approved in the Congress Working Committee goes- notification for the post of President will be issued on September 22. Nomination can be made between September 24 and 30. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on October 1 and can be withdrawn till October 8. In case of more than one candidate, polling will be held on October 17 and results will be declared after counting of votes on October 19.

The meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) was organised at the party headquarters and through virtual medium on Sunday. Sonia Gandhi presided over the meeting. She is currently abroad for treatment with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. The meeting was called to approve the schedule for the election of the next Congress President. The program was presented by the Chairman of the Central Election Authority, Madhusudan Mistry, on which the decision was taken unanimously.

Mistry announced the program in a press conference held at the party headquarters after the CWC meeting. Party’s organisation general secretary KC Venugopal said that more than 9,000 party workers will be able to vote in the election. Voting will be conducted at the state headquarters.

Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former union ministers Jairam Ramesh, Mukul Wasnik and P Chidambaram attended the meeting. Along with them, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel were also in attendance.
