Mathura, 1 June: In a joint operation of Shergarh police station and Special Operation Group (SOG), a rape accused carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 has been gunned down in an encounter on Saturday, police said.
Police informed that he had escaped after dodging the police on Friday, since then he was being searched.
Senior Superintendent of Police Shailesh Pandey said that the miscreant has been identified as Manoj alias Uttam, resident of Mai village of Shergarh police station. There was a reward of fifty thousand rupees on him. Last week, in Mahavan area, he had raped a 65-year-old woman by taking her to a field on the pretext of giving her a lift on a bike. She was also robbed. In this incident, villagers had demonstrated in large numbers at the police office demanding action against the accused. The police started searching for the accused after giving assurance of action. He was arrested in an encounter on Thursday night and admitted to the district hospital for treatment. On Friday afternoon, this vicious man had escaped by dodging. When his location was found on Sehi Road on Saturday morning, a joint team of SOG and police surrounded him from all sides. On this he fired at the police team.
Pandey added that about seven rounds were fired, in which Manoj was injured. He was admitted to the hospital for treatment, where the doctors declared him dead.
The SSP said that the deceased criminal had committed many rape incidents with the help of weapons. In the year 2015, a woman from his village was also raped at gunpoint on his farm. He had also gone to jail in this case.
The killed criminal had come out on one month’s parole on May 15 on the pretext of providing surety. On May 25, in Mahavan police station area, he raped an elderly woman by taking her to a deserted place on the pretext of giving her a lift. After this he looted her jewellery. He had committed the crime with many women, but due to social norms, no one had lodged any complaint.
