New Delhi, June 28: Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has expressed deep condolences to the victims of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) terminal accident.
He announced a compensation of โน 20 lakh to the families of the deceased and โน 3 lakh for the injured.
This accident happened at the terminal on Friday morning and the minister had come to inspect the spot. union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu was talking to reporters at the spot. He said that the outer part of the airport collapsed due to heavy rains. It was constructed in 2009.
He said that we express our condolences to the victims of this tragic incident. The injured are being taken care of. Fire safety team and CISF, NDRF teams were also present during the accident. The union Minister said that at present the situation in the rest of the terminal building is under control. Everything is being investigated thoroughly.
It is worth informing that a major accident took place early this morning at Terminal-1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport located at Palam in the national capital Delhi. Three vehicles were buried under the debris due to sudden collapse of the upper part of the roof.
One person has died in the accident, while seven others were injured. They were immediately rushed to the hospital. Four fire brigade vehicles and a police team reached the spot.
Fire department director Atul Garg told that eight people were buried under the debris. They were taken out and admitted to Medanta Hospital. One of them died. Seven injured are undergoing treatment. Indigo and Spice Jet have updated passengers on X that the flight to Delhi has been cancelled due to damage to Terminal-1, as passengers are not able to enter the terminal.
Both the companies have said that the passengers already present inside the terminal will be able to board their flights. The turn of the passengers with flights later in the day will come. Passengers have been advised to know the status of their flight before leaving for the airport. For this, the companies have also issued helpline numbers.
Passenger Anikit at Terminal-1 of Delhi Airport says, “I was going to Bangalore. I had a flight at 8:15 am. The roof collapsed here at around 5:15 am. The airport authority has no answer. 700-800 people are standing here, there is no person visible from whom the right answer can be obtained.”
Another passenger said that I had an Indigo flight at 9 am. I don’t think any flight will depart from here. A passenger who had arrived to catch the 9 o’clock flight said that the officials asked him to go to Terminal 2. It seems that all the flights from here have been cancelled.
On the other hand, Delhi Metro has closed the entry and exit at Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector-25 Metro Station due to heavy rain. Shuttle service from Delhi Aerocity Metro Station to Terminal 1-IGI Airport has also been suspended.
