New Delhi, April 26: The Safdarjung Hospital has achieved a major achievement in its robotic surgery program. A huge adrenal tumor was successfully removed by performing complex robotic surgery on a 36-year-old woman in the hospital.

Safdarjung Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Sandeep Bansal said that this adrenal tumor of 18.2 x 13.5 cm is the world’s largest adrenal tumor ever removed by robot.

Dr Bansal said that this achievement is dedicated to Safdarjung Hospital’s expertise in robotic surgery and providing state-of-the-art quality healthcare to all patients free of cost. Such complex robotic surgery is done free of cost in Safdarjung Hospital, in the private sector it costs more than lakh rupees.

The team that performed the robotic surgery was headed by Dr Pawan Vasudeva, Professor, Department of Urology and Renal Transplant and included Dr Neeraj Kumar and Dr Avishek Mandal. The anesthesia team included Dr Sushil, Dr Bhavya and Dr Megha.

Dr Pawan Vasudeva, Professor, Department of Renal Transplant and Head of the Surgery Team, said that the procedure was quite complicated and risky as the tumor had not only grown very large but was also dangerously attached to three important structures of the body i.e. inferior vena cava, liver and right kidney. It was important that the tumor be completely removed without damaging the surrounding vital structures. Dr Vasudeva said that with the 3D vision of the da Vinci robot and its dexterous robotic hands, complex surgery can be performed with more precision than is usually possible with laparoscopy. In this case, the surgery lasted more than three hours and the tumor could be completely removed without any complications. The condition improved after the operation and the patient was discharged in three days.

Dr Vasudev said that if the surgery was done through open route, it would have required a skin incision of more than 20 cm and then it would have taken a few weeks for complete recovery.
