New Delhi, November 23: The Election Commission has taken cognizance of the statement of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a public meeting in Rajasthan.

The Commission has issued a notice to Rahul Gandhi asking why action should not be taken against him for violating the Model Code of Conduct. He has been given time to reply until Saturday evening.

The Commission has sent him a notice under various provisions of the Election Model Code.

Rahul Gandhi had used words like ‘pickpocket’ and ‘panauti (Ill Omen)’ for Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an election rally in Barmer yesterday. Apart from this, he had also made allegations of losing the World Cup and waiving off the loans of industrialists.

The BJP had complained about this to the Election Commission. The party said that it was wrong for the Prime Minister to use such words and make allegations without verifying them.
