(Evening Lead) Results of bypolls on 7 assembly seats: BJP won 3 seats, opposition alliance on 4

New Delhi, 8 September (Hindustan Reporter). The results of the by-elections held on September 5 on 7 assembly seats in 6 states of the country were declared on Friday. According to the results, BJP managed to win three seats while Congress, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party and JMM, which are part of the opposition alliance (INDA), managed to win one seat each.

BJP (3 seats)

Dhanpur Constituency: In the by-elections held on seven assembly seats, three seats won by BJP include two from Tripura and one from Uttarakhand. BJP retained its hold on Dhanpur seat of Tripura. On this seat, BJP candidate Bindudev Nath defeated his nearest rival CPI(M) candidate Kaushik Debnath by 18871 votes.

Boxanagar Assembly seat: BJP candidate Taffazzal Hussain defeated CPI(M)’s Mizan Hussain by a huge margin in the Boxanagar assembly seat of Tripura. The BJP wrested this seat from the CPI(M). Samsul Haque of CPI-M had won the last election. Due to his death, a by-election was held here.

Bageshwar constituency: BJP retained its hold by winning the Bageshwar (reserved) seat of Uttarakhand in the by-election. Here, BJP had made Das’s wife Parvati Devi its candidate on the seat vacant after the death of BJP MLA Chandan Ram Das, who defeated Basant Kumar of Congress by 2405 votes. Chandan Das had won this seat in four consecutive elections since 2007.

Congress (1)

Puthuppalli Vis Seat: Congress has won one seat in the by-election. Congress candidate Chandy Oommen, son of former state Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, won the Puthupalli assembly seat in Kerala. He defeated CPI(M) candidate Jack C. Thomas by 37719 votes. The seat fell vacant after the death of former Chief Minister of the state, Oommen Chandy.

Samajwadi Party (1)

Ghosi Constituency: Samajwadi Party candidate Sudhakar Singh won the Ghosi assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh. Sudhakar Singh defeated BJP candidate Dara Singh Chauhan. Dara Singh Chauhan won the election from this seat in 2022 on an SP ticket but resigned from the assembly membership and joined the BJP. After that, the BJP made Dara Singh Chauhan the candidate for the by-election on this seat.

Trinamool Congress (1)

Dhupguri Constituency: The Trinamool Congress has wrested the Dhupguri assembly seat from the BJP in West Bengal. TMC’s Nirmal Chandra Roy defeated BJP’s Taapsee Roy by a margin of 4313 votes in the by-election to the seat which fell vacant after the death of BJP MLA Bishnu Pandey. The deposit of CPI (M) candidate Ishwar Chandra Roy was forfeited on this seat.

JMM (1)

Dumri assembly seat: The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) retained its hold on the Dumri assembly seat in Jharkhand. JMM’s Baby Devi has won the seat which fell vacant after the death of JMM MLA Jagarnath Mahato. He defeated AJSU candidate Yashoda Devi in a close fight.
