New Delhi, 03 Sept: The BJP chose former Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma as its candidate for the state’s Rajya Sabha by-election on Sunday.
The by-election, set for September 15, was prompted by the death of incumbent MP Hardwar Dubey, who was also a BJP member. The seat is valid until November 2026. Sharma’s victory is almost assured due to the BJP’s commanding majority in the state legislature.
He, like Dubey, belongs to the Brahmin community. Sharma served as one of the two deputy chief ministers in the first term of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s cabinet, which ran from 2017 to 22.
