New Delhi, March 1: According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), February of the year 2025 has been the month with the highest temperature in the last 125 years. This was the hottest February since the beginning of keeping temperature records in the country from the year 1901. Something similar happened in January this year.
As per the IMD, this month of the beginning of the year was also the third hottest January in the history of 125 years. The series of record-breaking temperatures is definitely not giving good signs.
The forecast issued by the Indian Meteorological Center from March to May is also scary. The average temperature in India during February was recorded at 22.04 degrees Celsius, which is 1.34 degrees Celsius more than normal.
According to the four regions into which India’s climate is divided, this year’s February was the warmest ever in central India, third warmest in south India, fifth warmest in northwest and ninth warmest in east and northeast India. This February, the average maximum temperature was 24.6 degrees Celsius in central India, 26.75 in south India, 20.14 in east and northeast India and 17.11 degrees Celsius in northwest India.
According to the Meteorological Department, monthly maximum temperatures are likely to be above normal in most parts of India during March 2025, except some southern parts of peninsular India, where maximum temperatures are likely to be below normal. Talking about minimum temperature, during March 2025, monthly minimum temperatures are likely to be above normal in most parts of the country, except some parts of northwest India and south peninsula, where normal minimum temperatures are most likely.
Forecast of heatwave events
The Meteorological Department said that during the March to May 2025 season, the number of heatwave days is likely to be above normal in most parts of the country but Northeast India, Far North India and South-Western and Southern parts of Peninsular India will get relief.
