Kolkata, 1 December: WB Police have registered an FIR against 11 BJP MLAs for allegedly insulting the national anthem. In two separate FIRs, the MLAs have been accused of insulting the national anthem and the Constitution.
This case has been registered on the basis of a complaint filed by an officer of the West Bengal Assembly. A primary case has been registered at the Hare Street police station of the Kolkata Police Headquarters located in Lal Bazar.
In fact, the Trinamool Congress and BJP MLAs were protesting against each other in the West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday evening. Slogans of chor-chor were being raised from both sides. Then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asked her party MLAs to sing the national anthem. The BJP MLAs are accused of saying that when the ruling party MLAs, including the Chief Minister, were singing the national anthem, they did not stand up and kept raising slogans of Chor Chor.
After this, on Thursday, on the complaint of an assembly official, the police arrested MLAs Sudeep Kumar Mukherjee, Malti Reva Roy, Chandana Bauri, Niladri Shekhar Dana, Mihir Goswami, Manoj Kumar Oraon, Suman Kanjilal, Deepak Burman, Hiranmay Chattopadhyay, Manoj Tigga, and Shankar Ghosh. An FIR has been registered.
After this, on Friday, a second FIR was registered against five of these MLAs: Niladri Shekhar Dana, Deepak Burman, Manoj Tigga, Shankar Ghosh, and Sudeep Kumar Mukherjee. They have been accused of insulting the Constitution. The BJP has expressed strong opposition to this. MLA Agnimitra Paul has said that BJP MLAs are being harassed because they raise their voices.
