Lucknow, 27 December: The Friday prayers in Uttar Pradesh were peacefully concluded. Till evening no untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the state. Tight security arrangements were made today in the wake of widespread violence during demonstrations against the amended citizenship law after the prayers of Jume last week. Paramilitary personnel were deployed in sensitive areas. Monitoring was also done through drone cameras. Internet services were closed as a precautionary measure to curb rumors.
State Inspector General of Police Law and Order Praveen Kumar said that there was peace throughout the state today. He told that peace committee meetings have been held in all the districts resulting in there was an atmosphere of peace in the entire state. Law and order in the state was completely under control.
According to the information received from various districts, today the district and police administration remained on alert mode throughout the day including the capital Lucknow, due to which there was no ruckus anywhere. The people who came out of the mosques after Namaz went straight to their homes. In the districts of western Uttar Pradesh too, people offered prayers and peacefully left for their respective homes. Police and paramilitary forces were deployed in large numbers around the mosques. The security system was chalked out since morning, which continued till evening. Constant patrolling was also being done in sensitive areas.
Apart from Lucknow, according to reports received from Varanasi, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Meerut, Agra, Moradabad, Bareilly and other districts, the prayers in various mosques were performed peacefully.
Significantly, there were violent demonstrations in several districts of the state after the Friday prayers on the revised citizenship law. During this time 19 people died across the state. About 288 policemen, including Additional Director General of Police of Lucknow, were received injuries.
In view of this, tremendous security arrangements were made regarding the Namaz of Jume. Root marches were carried out by forces in sensitive areas of almost all districts a day earlier. Meetings were also held with Peace Committee in all areas of police stations.
Due to the violence, internet services which were closed in many districts of the state were restored for about a week, but as a precaution, it has been discontinued again in 21 cities so that no rumor can spread from social media. In some districts, internet has been shut since Thursday afternoon. Drone cameras were used to monitor sensitive areas today.
1246 arrests so far in violent demonstrations
Inspector General of Police Law and Order said that so far 372 prosecutions have been registered and 1246 arrests have been made in various districts in the state. He said that so far 95 prosecutions have been registered and 125 people have been arrested for misleading posts on social media. Apart from this, 687 illegal cartridges have been recovered so far.
He informed that so far, recovery notice has been issued to 498 protesters all over the state to compensate for the loss incurred in the violence. In the notice issued, the organizers have been asked to present their case in three days.
