General budget 2022-23: Imports for defense sector will be less; startups will be given a boost: FM Sitharaman

New Delhi, 01 February: Tabling the Union Budget for 2022-23, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated on Tuesday that the government will reduce the import of equipment for the armed forces and promote indigenous procurement under a self-reliant India.

In the Lok Sabha, while giving the general budget speech from her iPad, Sitharaman said that for the year 2022-23, 68 percent of the budget has been earmarked for procurement from domestic industry.

She said that Defense Research and Development (R&D) would be opened to private sector, startups and academia with 25% of the Defense R&D budget.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget for the financial year 2022-23 in Parliament on Tuesday.

While presenting the General Budget in digital form in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Sitharaman said that this budget is the blue print of the next 25 years of the โ€˜Amrit Kaalโ€™.

Sitharaman has presented the general budget for the fourth time in the second term of the Modi government.

Presenting the budget, Sitharaman stated that chemical free natural farming will be promoted across the country with focus on farmers’ land in 5 km wide corridors along the banks of river Ganga.

She said that PM e-Vidya’s ‘One Class, One TV Channel’ program will be expanded from 12 to 200 TV channels. This will enable all the states to provide supplementary education in regional languages โ€‹โ€‹for classes I to XII.

She added that our government has extensively revamped schemes like Mission Shakti, Mission Vatsalya, Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 of the Ministry of Women and Child Development to provide benefits. Along with this, e-passport will be issued in the financial year 2022-23 to increase the convenience of citizens. The Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) will be extended till March 2023, while the guarantee cover will be increased from Rs 50,000 crore to a total of Rs 5 lakh crore.

She said that in the budget of the financial year 2022-23, contracts will also be given for eight ropeway projects of 60 km length.

Sitharaman said the use of farmer drones for crop evaluation, digitization of land records, spraying of pesticides and nutrients will be promoted. He said that an online billing system would be introduced to reduce the delay in payment and it would be used by all the central ministries.

Earlier, the Union Cabinet approved the Union Budget for the financial year 2022-23, after which Sitharaman reached the Parliament House to present the General Budget with the approval of the President.
