New Delhi, 27 June: The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog, India’s leading public policy think tank, released a comprehensive perspective titled “India’s Booming Gig and Platform Economy” on Monday, providing detailed viewpoints and suggestions on the “gig” (a job that lasts for a set period of time) economy in India. Gig workers are people who work on an as-needed, contract, temporary, or freelance basis.
Suman Berry, vice chairman of NITI Aayog, Amitabh Kant, and K Rajeswara Rao, special secretary, unveiled the report.
The study provided a comprehensive methodical approach for calculating the sector’s current size and potential for job creation.
Furthermore, it has highlighted international best practices on social security program initiatives, as well as the prospects and challenges of this emerging industry. Platform work, as a new-age phenomenon, has a number of undiscovered characteristics.
This study attempted to fill these knowledge gaps by organizing its framework around four key pillars: data, job creation, comparison and learning from global peers, and recommendations for government interventions.
