A man uses a wheelchair to avoid customs: Another example occurred last week (June 7) when a wheelchair-bound man was detained at Delhi’s international airport for smuggling gold worth ?1.13 crore concealed under his shoes.

The accused, from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, was detained by customs officers upon his return from Dubai. Despite having no evident injuries, the passenger, who is in his late twenties, requested wheelchair transportation from the airport.

A thorough search yielded the seizure of 2.15 kg of gold paste, worth ? 1.13 crore, hidden between his shoes. Some travel brokers enticed the traveller, who works in Dubai, to carry gold in return for flight tickets.

The use of a wheelchair to avoid customs officials was also encouraged by travel agencies. People from the Gulf nations frequently try to bring gold hidden from the authorities in order to avoid paying taxes on the metal.
