Prayagraj, 15 Sept: The High Court Bar Association agreed on Friday to abandon its intention to strike in protest over an alleged lathicharge on attorneys in Hapur district on August 29.

Following conversations with the chief secretary, the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh announced the cancellation of a nationwide strike by attorneys.

According to Ashok Kumar Singh, head of the High Court Bar Association, the group resolved to rescind the demand to refrain from judicial activity during a meeting held here on Friday morning.

He further stated that the attorneys had resumed their visits to the High Court. Following consultations with the chief secretary, the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh declared on Thursday night that the statewide strike by attorneys will be called off.

Lawyers in Uttar Pradesh have been on strike since August 30 in response to an alleged police lathicharge on advocates the day before in Hapur.

”Conversations with Chief Secretary Durga Shankar Mishra were really encouraging. He has pledged that cases filed against practitioners across the state during the agitation will be withdrawn,” said Shiv Kishore Gaur, head of the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council.

”A committee on advocates protection law has been constituted, including a representative from the Bar Council, and the proposal for this law will be enacted within a defined time limit,” he added. ”The government has agreed the demand for the suspension of guilty police personnel and the removal of top police officials in Hapur,” Gaur said. “We are calling off the strike because our demands have been met,” he added.

The walkout by attorneys hampered judicial activity in the Allahabad High Court and in local courts throughout Uttar Pradesh. Police allegedly lathi-charged lawyers on August 29 in Hapur while they were protesting the filing of a case against a woman advocate and her father a week earlier, following a confrontation between the woman lawyer and police while she was driving to Ghaziabad.
