Kolkata, June 20: The Calcutta High Court has directed the establishment of an SIT in connection with the disturbance in the Matua community temple during Abhishek Banerjee’s visit to Bangaon.
During the hearing on the petition filed by BJP MP Shantanu Thakur on Tuesday, the court ordered the formation of a SIT.
The DG of State Police has been instructed to constitute the seat. Along with this, the SIT has been asked to submit the report by July 18.
It is worth mentioning that during Abhishek Banerjee’s visit to Bangaon in North 24 Parganas district on June 11, a situation of violence developed. Before his arrival, Shantanu’s pro-Matua workers had organised a separate meeting at the ground of the Matua Federation, where they (Matua workers) were demanding an apology from the Chief Minister. Even before Abhishek Banerjee’s arrival, there was tension.
The main gate of the temple was closed. Two sides of the Matua community clashed with each other, which made the situation tense. Meanwhile, Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee reached the Matua Mahasangh temple without informing anyone.
It is also alleged that Trinamool workers had gathered illegally in the temple, and the devotees present there were also threatened by Trinamool workers.
On heating up the matter, a complaint was lodged by the temple management, but no action was taken by the police.
On the other hand, a total of five FIRs were registered by the police against the devotees, including the temple committee, in that day’s incident. union minister and BJP leader Shantanu Thakur filed a case in the Calcutta High Court seeking an injunction against the Thakurbari unrest.
During the hearing on this on Tuesday, the court directed the SIT to investigate the matter.
