Lucknow, 9 May: The Allahabad High Court has ordered the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) to beef up security in jail and while gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari appears in court. The judge further decided that interviews with the undertrial prisoner should be prohibited.

The directive is significant in light of the public execution of incarcerated gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf when they were being brought for a medical check-up in Prayagraj. According to the court, “it was not opposed to the media interviewing undertrial prisoners.”

However, in light of the recent murder of undertrial inmates by criminals masquerading as media people, this limitation must be enforced in the interest of the prisoner’s protection, which is being heard by the Supreme Court.”

On a petition filed by Ansari’s wife Afsan, the division bench of Justices K.J. Thakar and Shiv Shankar Prasad gave the ruling.
