Meerut, 15 May: According to authorities, a man was detained on Monday for allegedly attacking a youth while walking with two Muslim women in a nearby market. Police were called when a video of three or four men beating up a young man circulated online. 15 males were observed misbehaving with the three workers that work together in a factory.
Police filed an FIR under Section 295A (acts designed to incite religious sentiments) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
According to Kotwali Inspector-in-Charge (SHO) Sanjay Verma, accused Mohammad Tanveer, who works at a business in the neighbourhood, has been apprehended based on the video.
After a thorough investigation, police stated they will take action against the others as well.
Locals could be seen messing with two young women and a youth who were strolling together in the footage of the incident that occurred at the Bhagat Singh Market here, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rohit Singh Sajwan.
It has been revealed that the three used to work in the same workplace and had gone to market to buy gifts for a common friend’s birthday. Locals who knew the women abused the youngster, he claimed.
Ankit Chowdhary, a local BJP leader, said that a Hindu youth was beaten up by Muslim men at Bhagat Singh Market and that police tried to cover it up by filing a charge under minor sections.
Chowdhary requested that a case be registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and stated that if all of the accused involved in the incident are not arrested soon, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will be informed.
