IIT Delhi student commits suicide due to mental illness

New Delhi, 23 October: An MSc student committed suicide by hanging himself in Aravali Hostel of IIT Delhi. Police received the news of suicide of an MSc student at around 11 pm on October 22 (Tuesday). As soon as the police received the PCR call, IO ASI Vijay and other staff reached the spot.

The deceased is being identified as Kumar Yash, whose age is said to be 21 years. Yash was a resident of Deoghar, Jharkhand. He was a second year student of MSc. Preliminary investigation revealed that Kumar Yash was suffering from mental illness and was undergoing treatment at IIT Hospital. He went for treatment on October 22 itself and also took an appointment to meet a psychiatrist on October 29.

During investigation, it was found that the room was locked from inside, but his friend and IIT staff broke the door window to enter the room. The deceased Yash was lying in the room, his friends and IIT staff took him to the hospital, where the doctors on duty declared him dead. His body has been kept safe in the mortuary. Also, the family members of the deceased have been informed and the mobile crime team on the spot has investigated the hostel room where the deceased committed suicide.

According to DCP Surendra Chaudhary of South West District, the police has not found any suicide note from the spot. According to the medical report card of the deceased student, he had gone to IIT Hospital for the treatment of psychiatric illness where he was being treated. At present, the police is investigating the whole matter from every angle.

IIT administration expressed grief

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi said on Wednesday that the institute is deeply saddened by the unfortunate and untimely death of the second year MSc student. The institute has expressed condolences to the family and friends of the student.

IIT issued a statement saying that the institute is deeply saddened by the unfortunate and untimely death of the second year MSc Cognitive Science student of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.

According to the statement, Delhi Police is investigating the unfortunate incident that took place on the campus on October 22. The institute is making every effort to support his family in this hour of grief. IIT Delhi is fully committed to ensuring the mental and physical well-being of its students.
