Kanpur, 21 January: A criminal Arif alias Matha, who was brought from the district jail for court hearing, escaped by fooling the police. However, the police gheraoed the absconding criminal, who was shot in leg during an encounter in Kapli village of Panki police station area within a few hours on Monday night.
Deputy Commissioner of Police West Rajesh Kumar Singh said that more than a dozen cases like theft, attempt to murder, drug smuggling and robbery are registered against the notorious criminal Arif alias Matha, who lives in Panki. He is also declared a history sheeter from Panki police station. On Monday, he was brought from the jail to court hearing but he escaped by dodging the police. The police took the help of surveillance and informers to catch him. Late at night, the police got the location of the vicious criminal in Kapli located in Panki.
He apprised that The police team set out in a planned manner to nab miscreant. When he was surrounded and asked to surrender, he started running away by firing at the police team. In the retaliatory firing by the police, the culprit was shot in his left leg. He fell on the ground injured and the police chased him and caught him.
During the search, a stolen bike, a pistol and cartridges were also recovered from him. During police interrogation, he told that as soon as he came out of the court, he first stole a bike. He did not have any money. Therefore, he was planning to escape from the city at night by using the pistol and arranging money. At present, the police has admitted the injured to Hallet Hospital for treatment. He will be produced before the court on Tuesday and sent to jail.
