Lucknow, 7 May: The Uttar Pradesh Police took and detained activist and lawyer Mohammed Shoaib from his house on Sunday, according to his wife, Malka Bi.
Shoaib was hauled away by a group of police officers about 7.15 a.m., according to Malka Bi’s letter to the Aminabad police station in Lucknow. She said that the officers did not explain why they had taken up Shoaib.
“When the police arrived at our house, my husband was sleeping,” Malka Bi said. “There were six to seven plainclothes officials and three in uniform. Nothing has been done by my spouse. I’m not sure why he was taken away.”
Malka Bi informed the Lucknow Police that Shoaib has had high blood pressure for 15 years and has been ill for the past six months. Shoaib is the founder of Rihai Manch, an NGO that provides legal aid to vulnerable groups. He was detained in December 2019 in connection with protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. On January 15, 2020, he was granted bail.
