Lucknow Zoo employee killed in attack by hippopotamus

Lucknow, 18 Dec: An employee of the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden died on Monday after being attacked by a hippopotamus.

Suraj, a daily wage laborer, had entered the hippopotamus enclosure to clean it about 10.45 a.m. on Monday when he was attacked by the hippo, leaving him gravely injured, according to an official release.

The daily wage laborer was immediately brought to the Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries after some time. Suraj has been working at the zoo since 2013 and was involved in a variety of jobs related to cleaning various cages, according to the announcement. It was also said that the staff is standing with the bereaved family.

A senior zoo official stated that comprehensive cleaning work was being done on Monday, the zoo park’s off day.

He went on to say that it was a regrettable situation. Another officer stated that the zoo administration has offered โ‚น 50,000 to the deceased’s family.
