Lucknow, 25 Aug: Former Uttar Pradesh minister Amarmani Tripathi and his wife Madhumani Tripathi, who are serving life sentences for the murder of poet Madhumita Shukla, may be freed shortly.

The state Prisons Administration department issued an order releasing the minister and his wife. The minister and his wife should be freed from detention if they are not needed in another case, according to the decision.

According to the specifications, both Amarmani and his wife will be freed based on their age, the length of their prison sentence, and their excellent behavior in prison. The pair has been imprisoned in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, for the past 20 years and will be released if a bail is submitted.

They were convicted to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of poet Madhumita Shukla, who died on May 9, 2003, in Lucknow, by Special Judge/Sessions Judge of Dehradun.

The Central Bureau of inquiry (CBI) filed a chargesheet in court after finding Amarmani and his wife Madhumani guilty in its inquiry.

They were charged with intimidating witnesses, and the case was moved to Dehradun.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will consider a petition against the couple’s release on Friday.

However, the pair might be released before an order on the plea is issued.

According to the petition, submitted by victim Madhumita’s sister, Nidhi Shukla, the pair distorted their groundwork for release in an inappropriate manner by pointing to Supreme Court rulings delivered in unconnected instances.
